Velasquez VS. Dos Santos: The Rubber Match

doSantos vs Velasquez

It was Only a few of weeks ago that we witnessed one of the best fights in UFC history. Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson put on a hell of a show at UFC 165, where they engaged in a brutal and mauling 5 round battle that left many of us hungry for more. Though Jones retained his tittle, the fight was so close that many believed that Gustafsson did enough to win the fight. However, We are not about to get into that discussion.

The point that I am trying to make, is that fights where both fighters go all out, rarely happen. That is not to say that we won’t see another like it soon though.  I believe that UFC 166 has the potential to deliver yet another great battle in the main event bout between former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos  (JDS) VS. Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez.

Both JDS and Velasquez are at the top of the Heavyweight division and have showcased their dominance by defeating some of the toughest fighters in the division. This rubber match is perhaps one of the most unique to date. In fact, whats so unique about this fight, is that the only loss that both men have suffered in the UFC, is to each other, and both were devastating losses.

Dos Santos And Velasquez first met at UFC on Fox 1 (play by play HERE) where JDS showcased his striking skills and power by defeating and dethroning Velasquez of the heavyweight belt, after landing an overhand right that shocked many MMA fans, including my self. The way the fight ended took me by surprise. I mean Velasquez was dominating every opponent that was put in front of him, and he came into the fight with an impressive undefeated record. Watching Dos Santos Dispose of him was definitely not the way I imagined the fight would end (But this is the MMA and its been said many times before. Anything can happen!).

Leading to the Rubber Match: UFC 166

Dos Santos went on to defend his title for the first time against Frank Mir.  Once again, JDS displayed his superior boxing skills by Knocking out Mir in the second round, successfully defending his belt and solidifying him self as the Heavyweight Champion. Velasquez was set to fight Antonio Silva at UFC 149. He finished Silva via TKO earning himself the number 1 contender spot for the second time and was given the opportunity to fight for the title once again at UFC 155.  The rematch was even bigger than the first fight. Many including my self were expecting to see JDS display his almost flawless striking, but this time Velasquez came prepared and wanted to make a statement. After 5 grueling one sided rounds of fighting, Velasquez made a huge statement by not only defeating dos Santos, but by completely dominating him for all 25 minutes of the fight. Velasquez won via unanimous decision (The scores were 50-45, 50-43, 50-44) and was once again crowned the Heavyweight Champion. ( Check out the UFC 155 Play by Play HERE) Just Like their first fight, many of us were shocked by the results.

After loosing the title, JDS was set to fight Mark Hunt. Dana White stated that if Dos Santos was to defeat Hunt, he was to be the #1 contender for the Heavyweight Championship.  JDS needed to prove him self if he wanted another shot at the tittle, and he did exactly that at UFC 160 by outperforming and finishing Mark Hunt with a spinning head kick. This time JDS revealed that his hands are not his only weapon for finishing opponents (Click Here for the free fight).

With an impressive win over Hunt, JDS once again became the #1 contender and will have the opportunity to fight for the heavyweight belt at UFC 166 on October 19th. This bout has the drama, and the history to deliver yet another amazing fight. The first fight ended with a devastating finish for JDS.  The rematch was total domination, with Velasquez outclassing and outperforming JDS for 5 brutal rounds. Now they are set to face off once more in what could be the biggest rubber match to date.

Who do you give the edge to in the rubber match? Will Dos Santos finish the job once again? or will Velasquez overwhelm JDS and defend his title?
