Apple seeks billions in damages from Samsung in patent battle

Apple is seeking billions in damages from Samsung over patents used in smartphones and tablets. Apple believes Samsung owes “substantial monetary damages” in the region of $2.5 billion for illegally copying Apple products such as the iPhone and iPad.

Apple is seeking more than $2.5 billion in damages from Samsung, according to new court filings for a patent infringement case involving the two tech companies.The Cupertino, Calif., company alleges that design infringements involving smartphones and tablets by Samsung have caused it to lose $500 million in profit and that it is entitled to $25 million in royalties, according to Foss Patents. In total, Apple seeks $2.52 billion, which likely means it believes Samsung was enriched by $2 billion for its alleged infringement, but that’s unclear since that part of the filing’s text has been redacted.
“Samsung’s infringing sales have enabled Samsung to overtake Apple as the largest manufacturer of smartphones in the world,” Apple says in the filings. “Samsung has reaped billions of dollars in profits and caused Apple to lose hundreds of millions of dollars through its violation of Apple’s intellectual property.”But 13 minutes after Apple made its filings, Samsung entered claims of its own, according to Reuters. Samsung said Apple is trying “to stifle legitimate competition and limit consumer choice to maintain its historically exorbitant profits.”
The South Korean company is seeking a half cent in damages for every unit that infringes on the patent they’re focusing their claims on, according to Foss Patents.Though the two companies’ chiefs met last week to try to reach a settlement on this case for the second time this summer, they’ve had no luck and instead will head to trial in U.S. Federal Court on July 30, according to Reuters.
