Brooklyn Lifestyles: Doogie The Barber By Editor Tawann
In this particular post I chose to do something a little different. This will not be about the newest, and hottest of items fresh on the market. It will also not be about the fastest car, or cutting edge technology. Instead my focus will be on the life, or the “Lifestyle” if I may; of the immediate world around us. A world that is sometimes over shadowed by the glitz and glam of what we often yearn for but may not ever attain. Still, it is in this very world unknown that gives birth to our future creators, designers, manufacturers, and builders. It is in this ever present fact that brings me to a place that I may share with you a BROOKLYN LIFESTYLE DEFINED!
The day is July 13, 2011; and I have found my self absorbed in an array of beauty from so many vast angles. Traveling through these busy streets of Brooklyn, is in many ways like traveling to distant Countries. The divers cultures seem to almost bring communities together in collage like fashion. It is indeed; an artist’s dream painting. Yet out of this life art, we find those that make up a portion of that greater painting. People that are no more dissimilar to our selves than our own reflection in calm waters. People that create and shape their own destinies through personal struggle, achievements and triumphs. I believe Biggie said it best, when he said life was an; “Everyday Struggle”!
Upon reaching my destination, I found myself in the presence of a man that in his own way, knows about that everyday struggle, yet continues own. This gentleman was introduced to me by my older brother as Dwayne Joseph, or as his friends, my brother and I call him; “Doogie”! I chose to speak about Doogie because he like so many other ambitious, goal oriented Black Men and Women that come up in Brooklyn; they sometimes live as the unsung heroes, and talents that go unnoticed. Doogie a Professional hair stylist that has been cutting since the early 1990’s; has finally made it to the point where his hard work and dedication will show proof through his craft. About three weeks ago from today Dwayne Joseph opened his very own Barber shop located on 1647 Bedford avenue in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn and also where many call the heart of Brooklyn. Along with the basing his shop in this very center of the city, and as irony would to have its way, it just so happens to be a block away from the historical location of Ebbits Field where the Great Jackie Robinson once played major league baseball. Its is also directly across from Medgar Evers college.
While in the shop; I notice a small book with a picture of a man that appeared to be in deep thought, and the words below the picture said, “as a man thinketh…” If your path is a spiritual path then you may know exactly where that quote comes from, and also what it means. Still the quote represented everything that I believe Doogie stood for, and is one of the driving motivations that has led him to his current place in life. We are often defined by our actions, but it is the worth of our endeavors that makes our Lifestyles Defined…!
